Project Overview
STEAMhouse is a Birmingham City University building that is to be a centre for technology, innovation, creative thinking, prototyping and business development. The existing part of the building was known as The Belmont Works factory and was originally built in 1899, it served as the headquarters for the historic Eccles Rubber and Cycle Company. The renovated section of the building retains many of its original features.
The original three storey section of the building was façade retention and part rebuild due to fire damage, with a new steel frame behind to restrain and reflect the original framing.
The original section of the building is linked to the new rear extension by a double height glazed atrium.
The new rear extension consists of a five-storey reinforced concrete frame with flat slab construction, stabilised with reinforced concrete shear walls. Foundations were piled. Structure incorporated a landscaped courtyard at fourth floor level and rooftop plantwell.
